The Childbirth Graphics Advisory Board
The advisory board for Childbirth Graphics is composed of experts in the fields of childbirth education, obstetrics, breastfeeding, and midwifery. Each member has made significant contributions within their individual areas of expertise. Childbirth Graphics utilizes its advisory board members to review products, to check information on existing products that are being updated, to provide new product ideas, and to help Childbirth Graphics maintain its familiarity of the market trends. With the advisory board’s expert advice, knowledge, and opinions, Childbirth Graphics can better anticipate future trends.
2007/2008 Childbirth Graphics Advisory Board Members
Melissa Broadway is a Texas licensed midwife and a Certified Professional Midwife. Melissa has served as the Director of Education for the Association of Texas Midwives and President of Avanlee Birth and Maternity Center. Melissa currently resides in Academy, Texas with her family.
Sarah Coulter Danner has worked with breastfeeding mothers and babies for over 30 years, first in the public health arena and then as a pediatric nurse practitioner and nurse midwife. She has held faculty positions at Case Western Reserve University and with the Community Based Nurse Midwifery Education Program at the Frontier Nursing School. Currently, she is on faculty at the State University of New York (SUNY)-Pathways to Nurse Midwifery Program. Sarah was named the March of Dimes Nurse of the Year for Northeastern Ohio in 1982 and Women’s Health Champion of Northeast Ohio in 1991-1992. In 1986, Sarah received the Mary Ann Flynn Award for Nurse Midwifery. She was a representative on the U.S. Breastfeeding Committee for over ten years and still serves on the board of Baby Friendly U.S.A. Currently, Sarah is on the faculty at Oglala Lakota College in South Dakota, where she works in the Department of Nursing.
Michelle Kinne has been working in the field of Perinatal Education and labor support for over 12 years. She is an Internationally Certified Childbirth Educator, Internationally Certified Birth Doula and an Internationally Certified Lactation Educator. Michelle received her initial training as a childbirth educator from Bates Technical College and her initial training as a birth doula from the Seattle Midwifery School. Michelle is currently adjunct faculty for Bates Technical College where she trains and mentors future childbirth educators, lactation educators, and birth doulas. Michelle is the current Washington State Lactation Educator and Labor Doula Trainer for CAPPA. She is a member of the staff at three hospital systems where she facilitates classes in childbirth, newborn care, breastfeeding and parenting. She also works as a Lactation Specialist for a busy city hospital. Over the course of her career Michelle has had the pleasure of supporting numerous families and educating thousands of students.
Pie Kirby is a certified midwife by the Association of Texas Midwives who currently resides in Valley Mills, Texas. Pie is a member of the North Texas Midwives Association, CERC, Le Leche League, and the Association of Texas Midwives. Pie is currently an employee of A Child Is Born Birth Services.
Christy Miller, CNM, MS, is married and has a daughter and a son. She received her Master of Science in Nursing and Certified Nurse Midwife board certification in 1996 from the University of Michigan. She practiced for seven years in a busy, full-scope Certified Nurse Midwife Practice at Valley OB/GYN, PC in Saginaw, Michigan, before moving to Waco, Texas. In Waco she has been instrumental in starting the first full-time, full scope Certified Nurse Midwifery practice in the area. She is employed at Waco Center for Women's Health.
Mark Moore, M.D., is a board-certified OB/GYN physician in Central Texas. Dr. Moore is a native of North Dallas and has practiced medicine since 1998. He attended the University of Texas at Arlington and received his B.S. in Biology and Chemistry. He received his medical degree and residency training in OB/GYN at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas. Dr. Moore is married and has three children.
Lise Seger, a former labor and delivery nurse, brings over 20 years of experience in perinatal management, and medical-surgical nursing. Lise is currently an employee of Healthy Dimension, a nurse owned and operated continuing education firm with experience in the clinical, management, and administrative areas of health care. With expertise in the area of maternal child health nursing, her background also includes positions as a childbirth educator and a maternal child health education/quality management specialist. In addition to working with expectant families, Lise conducts workshops and seminars across the United States in childbirth education and maternal fitness. Lise is a member of AWHONN and NANN. Recently, she has also become part of the Childbirth Education Summit led by Lamaze International.
Penny Simkin is a physical therapist who has specialized in childbirth education and labor support since 1968. As an author, doula, childbirth educator, and birth counselor, Penny estimates that she has prepared over 9,500 women, couples, and siblings for childbirth. Currently, Penny serves on several boards of consultants and editorial boards, including the journal, Birth: Issues in Perinatal Care; the International Childbirth Education Association; and the Seattle Midwifery School, where she also teaches. Penny is also co-founder of the Pacific Association for Labor Support (PALS) and Doulas of North America (DONA). She is the author of many books on birth for both parents and professionals. Her latest products for birth educators and doulas are The Road Map of Labor and a birth video, titled The 3Rs: Relaxation, Rhythm, and Ritual. Today, Penny’s practice consists of childbirth education, birth counseling, and labor support. Penny and her husband, Peter, have four grown children and eight grandchildren, ranging in age from 4 to 21 years.
Amy Spangler is a registered nurse as well as an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant. She earned her bachelor’s degree in nursing from Ohio State University and her master’s degree in maternal and child health from the University of Florida. Amy has served as president of ILCA and chair of the United States Breastfeeding Committee. She is a member of the adjunct faculty at Emory University School of Nursing and the author of numerous publications including Breastfeeding: A Parent’s Guide, Breastfeeding: Keeping it Simple, Breastfeeding: Your Guide to a Healthy, Happy Baby and Guidelines for the Establishment of Exclusive Breastfeeding. Amy currently serves as president of Amy’s Babies and baby gooroo. She lectures on a wide variety of maternal and child health topics. Amy lives in Atlanta, Georgia with her husband, Dennis. They have two sons.
Susan Warhus, M.D., obtained her medical degree from the University of Arizona. She is a board-certified OB/GYN physician and co-founder of the largest all-female practice in Arizona. During her clinical practice, she delivered more than 3,000 babies. Susan is now a full-time writer, speaker, and patient educator for women's health issues. To help spread her message, Dr. Warhus has written several books including Countdown to Baby, Darn Good Advice - Pregnancy, and Fertility Demystified.
