Read on to learn more about the A to Z of Childbirth Graphics childbirth education materials and our comprehensive alphabet of offerings!

A Is for Abdominal Palpation

Whether sold on its own or as part of our Abdominal Palpation Model Set, our Abdominal Palpation Model is one of our most popular childbirth education teaching tools. The model is designed to train healthcare professionals on the performance of Leopold’s maneuvers with accurate palpation to determine fetal lie, presentation, and position. The included pelvis model and flexible, specially designed fetal model (featuring palpable anterior and posterior fontanels and firm buttocks) provide a realistic training experience. The abdomen is a padded cloth attached by Velcro to the base, which allows for easy removal and replacement of the fetal model to visualize and change fetal positions.

Watch as Childbirth Graphics advisory board member Christine R. Miller, MSN, CNM, demonstrates use of our Abdominal Palpation Model in this classic Childbirth Graphics video:

B Is for Breastfeeding

Breastmilk is the optimal first food for babies and offers multiple health benefits for both mothers and babies, but breastfeeding success often takes practice and support. That’s why Childbirth Graphics offers a diverse and innovative group of breastfeeding education resources—ranging from educational models and displays to activities, charts, and handouts—to teach expectant mothers the whys and hows of breastfeeding for breastfeeding success.

C Is for Cervical Dilation

Teaching about cervical dilation and effacement is simplified with our cervical dilation models and guides. Ranging from our color-coded Cervical Stacker™ Model to our descriptive Cervical Effacement & Dilation Model, we have multiple teaching tools to show the progression from early labor to active labor and transition.

D Is for Diapers

Having a baby means changing diapers … lots of diapers! Fortunately, we have a great teaching resource for first time parents: Our English/Spanish Loving Baby Care™: Diapering Your Baby Tear Pad is an easy-to-follow, step-by-step handout that explains how to change a baby’s diaper.

Our Dirty Details: Breastfed Baby Stool Story™ Display is a memorable way
to help parents know whether their baby is getting enough breastmilk.

The contents of a diaper can also tell a lot about whether a breastfed baby is getting enough breastmilk. Our Dirty Details: Breastfed Baby Stool Story™ Display is an unforgettable resource that features four cloth diapers containing simulated stool showing the progression of a healthy breastfed newborn’s stool from a first black sticky stool to a yellow watery or mushy stool by day 5 after birth.

E Is for Epidurals

For many women, having an epidural is part of the birth experience. To help teach women about this option during labor, our Epidural & Spinal Anesthesia Chart (available on its own or as part of our Labor and Birth Intervention Chart Set) explains how epidural anesthesia is administered. Penny Simkin’s Safe Positions With an Epidural is a great handout providing a quick reference on labor positions that are safe for women who have been given epidurals.

F Is for Fatherhood

Part of Childbirth Graphics’ mission of nurturing healthy families is ensuring that fathers are included in the childbirth education experience. Our section dedicated to fatherhood education products includes helpful teaching resources for expectant and new dads, such as our With Child™ Simulator, which expectant dads can use to experience some of the physical discomforts and inconveniences of pregnancy, and the Supportive Fathers Tear Pad Set, which provides expectant and new dads with key ways to help their partners during and after pregnancy.

Expectant fathers can experience the physical discomforts
of pregnancy firsthand with our With Child™ Simulator.

G Is for Gestational Diabetes

Gestational diabetes affects up to 10 percent of pregnancies. Expectant mothers who are diagnosed with gestational diabetes should work with their healthcare professionals to manage the condition to help ensure a healthy pregnancy and baby. Our Understanding Gestational Diabetes Tear Pad is an ideal English/Spanish handout to help explain what gestational diabetes is and why managing it is important for the prevention of complications.

H Is for Hindmilk

Once a breastfeeding mother’s breastmilk transitions to mature milk, it contains foremilk (the milk at the beginning of a breastfeeding session with lactose and protein) and hindmilk (the milk at the end of a breastfeeding session that contains the fat and calories a baby needs for healthy growth and development). Our Breastmilk Composition: What’s in a Day?™ Display contains models of colostrum, foremilk, and hindmilk and explains the importance of each component of breastmilk.

I Is for ICEA Childbirth Educator Tool Kits

Created in consultation with the International Childbirth Education association (ICEA), and available with fetal models in brown, dark brown, or beige skin tones, our ICEA Educator Tool Kits are perfect for childbirth educators on the go! The kits feature a roomy, convenient carrying bag filled with childbirth education essentials that are ideal for teaching the process of giving birth.

Penny Simkin’s Road Map of Labor Package includes
a laminated chart, presentation guide, and tear pad.

J Is for Journey

Childbirth is a journey from early labor to delivery, and nothing depicts that journey better than Penny Simkin’s Road Map of Labor! Available as a package, interactive display, or tear pad, Penny Simkin’s road map depicts labor as a journey with three paths, including a twisting, turning yellow brick road; a rougher, rockier detour for back pain; and an epidural highway, all ending with the baby’s birth. Along the road are illustrations of a variety of comfort measures to use as labor progresses.

K Is for Knitted Uterus

Our Knitted Uterus/Vagina Model is one of the most effective cervical effacement and dilation teaching tools ever created. The model is made of variegated blue acrylic yarns that differentiate the fundus, lower segment, cervix, and vagina (attached with snaps). The Knitted Uterus Model, Cesarean has the same features but includes a low-transverse zippered opening. The two knitted models are available with a beige, brown, or dark brown fetal model as a Knitted Uterus Model Set, facilitating demonstrations of how a fetus moves through the uterus and is delivered vaginally or by cesarean.

Available with fetal models in brown (shown here), dark brown, and beige,
our Knitted Uterus Model Set is a great tool to explain vaginal and cesarean birth.

L Is for Labor

Childbirth Graphics has an entire section of products dedicated to labor and birth that are geared toward educating expectant parents and healthcare students. Covering everything from contractions, cervical dilation, stages of labor, pelvic station, comfort measures, birth interventions, and much more, our labor and birth teaching tools are must-have materials for every childbirth education class!

M Is for Motherhood

The health and well-being of expectant and new moms is at the heart of Childbirth Graphics’ mission to nurture healthy babies and grow healthy families. With materials covering healthy pregnancy, breastfeeding, the postpartum period, and women’s health, our goal is to promote a healthy, happy transition into motherhood and parenting.

N Is for Nutrition During Pregnancy

Good nutrition throughout pregnancy is important for a healthy pregnancy and baby. Our Nutrition During Pregnancy Food Set, Flip Chart, and Booklet are great ways to teach about healthy eating and how to get essential nutrients throughout pregnancy.

O Is for Oral Health

Proper oral health is essential for young children’s overall health and development. Our Baby Bottle Tooth Decay Model Set is a great visual to teach parents how putting an infant or young child to bed with a bottle containing any kind of liquid with natural or added sugars—including juice, milk, breastmilk, formula, and soft drinks—can lead to serious early childhood tooth decay. Early childhood tooth decay can cause pain, speech problems, and poor eating habits. It can also damage permanent teeth.

Our Baby Bottle Tooth Decay Model Set shows parents the
perils of giving a child a bottle of fluids with sugars at bedtime.

P Is for Pregnancy

With materials and models covering everything from prenatal care and fetal development to comfort measures and exercise balls, Childbirth Graphics carries a full range of pregnancy education resources.

Q Is for Quiet Alert State

Often, shortly after birth, a newborn enters a quiet alert state. During this time, newborns are awake and relatively inactive with eyes open as they appear to scan the area around them. It’s a great time for parent-infant bonding and for moms to hold the newborn face-to-face and talk to the baby, who appears to listen attentively while watching the mom’s face. Our Healthy Newborns Flip Chart and Pocket Guide discuss the quiet alert state and help parents to recognize it, which can be helpful later on for feedings and playtime.

R Is for Rooting Reflex

Recognizing a newborn’s early signs of hunger, such as the rooting reflex—when a baby turns her head and opens her mouth in search of food—can help a new mother know when her baby is hungry and ready for breastfeeding. Crying is a late sign of hunger, so catching early signs of hunger may help a baby feed better. Many of our breastfeeding education materials, such as our How to Tell Whether Your Baby Is Hungry Tear Pad or Breastfeeding Chart Set cover the rooting reflex and other signs of infant hunger.

S Is for Safety

Childbirth Graphics provides educational materials and models to teach parents and caregivers the basics of keeping infants and young children safe. Our Reducing the Risk of SIDS Tear Pad and Loving Baby Care™: Sleep Safety Tear Pad reinforce the importance of putting babies on their backs to sleep. Shaken baby syndrome (SBS) is a severe form of child abuse that is completely preventable, and our Shaken Baby Demonstration Model provides clear evidence of why babies and young children should never be shaken.

Our Shaken Baby Demonstration Model reveals how
the devastating damage of SBS occurs when a baby is shaken.

T Is for Tub Bathing

Once a baby’s umbilical cord falls off, he is ready for tub bathing. Caring for a newborn can be intimating for new parents, including bath time. Fortunately, our Newborn Care Kit features a baby bathtub and a doll that are ideal to practice newborn bathing, and our Loving Baby Care™: Tub Bathing Tear Pad presents simple, easy-to-follow color photos and text that explain how to give an infant a tub bath.

U Is for Uterus/Fetus Model Set

Fetal development takes on an added realism with the five lifelike uterus and fetus models in our Uterus/Fetus Model Set. Made of soft, BIOLIKE™ synthetic material, the models realistically depict fetal development at 8, 10, 16, 22, and 40 weeks. The fetal models can even be removed from the uterus models for hands-on learning.

Our Uterus/Fetus Model Set depicts
growth of the uterus and fetus during pregnancy.

V Is for Vaccines

Parents often have questions about vaccines and early childhood immunizations. Our Childhood Immunizations Folding Display features engaging images of young children and discusses more than 14 illnesses that can be prevented with vaccination.

W Is for With Child™

With Child is Childbirth Graphics’ unique, award-winning childbirth education program. From the detailed illustrations in our With Child Large-Size Spiral-Bound Charts to our With Child Simulator that gives non-pregnant wearers the opportunity to experience the discomforts and inconveniences of pregnancy, our With Child program provides comprehensive childbirth education.

X Is for X-Rays

Exposure to radiation during pregnancy can cause concerns for a developing fetus. Many of our pregnancy education resources (including, for example, our Mama, I Want to Be Healthy Pamphlet/Poster and our Prenatal Care Booklet) remind women who are pregnant to inform their healthcare professionals about their pregnancy before X-rays are performed. Often, however, the risk of not receiving an X-ray for medical reasons is greater than the risk of possible exposure to the baby.

Help moms understand their newborns’ breastmilk
needs with our Baby Bellies Pocket Model Key Chain.

Y Is for Yellow

Yellow is the color associated with colostrum, the concentrated first milk a breastfed baby receives, which is full of nutrients and antibodies. Our Breastmilk Composition: What’s in a Day? Display includes replicas of yellowish colostrum as well as foremilk and hindmilk. Yellow is also the healthy stool color of a breastfed baby by the fifth day after birth, which is depicted by our Baby Bellies™ Pocket Model Key Chain and Dirty Details: Breastfed Baby Stool Story Display.

Z Is for Zero Cost

Among the many great reasons to breastfeed is the fact that, unlike infant formula, breastmilk is completely free! Our The ABCs of Breastfeeding Benefits Pamphlet highlights this fact as well as many other reasons why breastfeeding is best for mothers and babies.
