In 2020, 3,613,647 were born in the United States. Provisional data from 2021 suggest the birth rate went up about 1 percent in 2021, with about 3,659,289 babies born that year. The word is out: Breastmilk is the optimal first food for infants. The latest Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend exclusive breastfeeding for an infant’s first 6 months of life, followed by the introduction of complementary foods with the continuation of breastfeeding for at least the first year. Although research suggests that more than 80 percent of babies in the United States start life consuming at least some breastmilk, just under a quarter of infants are exclusively fed breastmilk for their first 6 months.

Although breastfeeding is natural, it can be challenging. Fortunately, families can achieve greater breastfeeding success with the dedicated support of breastfeeding educators.
