Teaching Tools for New Dads

It’s June: Men’s Health Month and the month when we celebrate Father’s Day on the third Sunday every June.

Between pregnancy, labor and birth, breastfeeding, and the postpartum period, the focus of childbirth education understandably is primarily on the health and well-being of mothers and babies. Fathers, however, play an essential part in creating healthy families by supporting their partners through pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum period and building their own unique bonds with their babies.

In recognition of Men’s Health Month, Father’s Day, and the important role dads play in building healthy families, Childbirth Graphics creates and provides effective fatherhood education products to teach expectant and new dads how to get fatherhood off to the best start. Read on to learn about several of our featured fatherhood teaching tools, which are part of our growing line of fatherhood education products!

Understanding Pregnancy: The With Child™ Simulator

Pregnancy is an exciting time, but the physical changes a woman experiences during pregnancy often bring inconvenience and varying degrees of discomfort. Our With Child Simulator is a fun and memorable way for expectant dads to get a bit of firsthand experience of the physical discomforts and changes his partner is experiencing during pregnancy.

Expectant fathers can experience the physical discomforts
of pregnancy firsthand with our With Child™ Simulator.

Coming with a detailed teaching guide, the With Child Simulator gives expectant dads and other wearers the opportunity to experience approximately 25 pounds of pregnancy weight gain and many of the accompanying pregnancy discomforts an expectant woman experiences. While participating in the discussions and activities detailed in the teaching guide, wearers can experience multiple pregnancy-related discomforts, including increased breast size; inability to get comfortable; pelvic tilt; waddling gait from shift in posture; pressure on the bladder, stomach, and lungs; abdominal distention; decreased mobility; shortness of breath; abdominal aches; and much more.

Watch as Childbirth Graphics advisory board member and health educator Sara Herbelin, MS, MCHES, CD(DONA), LCCE, demonstrates some of the many teaching possibilities of our With Child Simulator:

The With Child Simulator is ideal for prenatal education classes to help expectant dads understand the physical struggles of their pregnant partners, develop greater empathy for their partner’s pregnancy experiences, and know why their care and support is so important for a healthy mother and baby.

Being There for Mom: Supportive Fathers Tear Pad Set

Today’s fathers want to be more involved than fathers of previous generations, and the four tear pads in our Supportive Fathers Tear Pad Set provide them with helpful suggestions to be involved from pregnancy through the postpartum period.

Made for dads, the four tear pads in our Supportive Fathers Tear Pad

Written especially for expectant and new dads, the four 100-sheet English/Spanish tear pads in the set highlight the many reasons fathers matter and offer useful tips and strategies that dad can use to support their partner and baby. The How Fathers Can Support Pregnancy Tear Pad encourages expectant dads to learn as much as possible about pregnancy and provide their partner with love and encouragement. The How Fathers Can Support Labor and Birth Tear Pad gives dads pointers on the help they can provide their partners during early labor and how they can advocate for their partner at the birthing facility. The How Fathers Can Support Breastfeeding Tear Pad helps dads understand why breastmilk is best for babies and how they can help their new family achieve breastfeeding success. The How Fathers Can Support the Postpatum Mom Tear Pad helps dads understand the physical changes their partners are experiencing after childbirth and how they can make recovery and the transition to parenthood easier.

Also available separately, each of these early fatherhood tear pads helps dads recognize the immeasurable ways they matter for nurturing and building healthy families.

Taking Care of Dad: Postpartum Depression in New Fathers Tear Pad

While prioritizing their partners and new babies, it’s also important for new fathers to take time for themselves and realize when they need help, too. Our 100-sheet, English/Spanish Postpartum Depression in Fathers Tear Pad helps new fathers understand that postpartum depression in fathers is a very common men’s health issue that can be treated successfully.

Our Postpartum Depression in Fathers Tear Pad explains that
postpartum depression in men is very common and treatable.

Postpartum depression affects about 10 percent of new dads, who, like moms, actually experience hormonal fluctuations during their partner’s pregnancy and after the baby’s birth. This reassuring tear pad explains how postpartum depression in fathers can negatively impact a family and how it can be treated effectively, leading to better outcomes for the whole family.
