Educational Activities With
a Lasting Impact

Whether you are working with an expectant mom, an expectant mom with her partner or other birth companion, a new parent, or a group of expectant or new parents, sometimes the best way to present information, keep everyone engaged, and have a lasting impact is to present a fun, thought-provoking, educational activity.

At Childbirth Graphics, we have multiple, one-of-a-kind educational activities that are ideal to teach expectant and new parents about the essentials from pregnancy through breastfeeding and early parenting.

Read on to learn about five great childbirth and parenting education activities that are perfect to use with individuals or groups as they prepare to take on the role of new parent or caregiver.




Pregnancy Education Activities



Pregnancy is an exciting time, but the physical changes an expectant mom experiences often bring inconvenience and varying degrees of discomfort. Our With Child Simulator is a fun and memorable way for expectant dads to get a bit of firsthand knowledge about the physical discomforts and changes his partner is undergoing throughout pregnancy. The simulator provides wearers the opportunity to experience approximately 25 pounds of pregnancy weight gain and many of the accompanying pregnancy discomforts an expectant woman feels. While participating in the discussions and activities detailed in the teaching guide, wearers can experience multiple pregnancy-related discomforts, including increased breast size; inability to get comfortable; pelvic tilt; waddling gait from shift in posture; pressure on the bladder, stomach, and lungs; abdominal distention; decreased mobility; shortness of breath; abdominal aches; and much more.
Created by childbirth educator and Childbirth Graphics Advisory Board Member Theresa Erichsen, RN, BSN, LCCE, FACCE, IBCLC, the Womb to Grow Model Set of nine weighted, pillowlike models is a great teaching tool to use with expectant teens or adult couples. Each model represents the average size and weight of a fetus at one of nine stages of development. The front of each model features a simple drawing of the developmental stage. The back has information on the developmental stage of the fetus illustrated on the front. Although the embryo model (4–6 weeks) is larger and heavier than the actual size and weight of a human embryo, the other eight models depict the actual size and weight of fetal development at the stage they represent, ranging from 0.4 grams to 7 pounds. Detailed presentation notes offer a variety of teaching applications, from prenatal care to the stages of labor and delivery.



Newborn Care & Parenting Activities



A fun, collaborative activity is one of the best methods to get students and clients to learn about breastfeeding. Our SpinSmart Breastfeeding Wheel provides facilitators with a lively way to get individuals and groups learning essential information about breastfeeding that can help them attain breastfeeding success. The wheel is covered with eight lactation education topics: getting started, breastfeeding benefits, breastfeeding support, how breastfeeding works, problem solving, myths and facts about breastfeeding, pumping and storage, and latch and position. Players can listen, laugh, and learn together as they spin the wheel and answer a series of multiple-choice questions. The wheel’s detailed teaching guide includes 80 category questions and 11 bonus questions for more detailed discussion starters.
Sometimes, it takes a little extra effort and a lot of encouragement to help little ones understand why brushing their teeth is a healthy habit. Our Plaque Hunter Demonstration Model is an engaging instructional tool educators and parents can use to teach young people about the importance of proper brushing and flossing. The demonstration begins by rubbing invisible simulated plaque over the teeth and gums. Then, after the teeth are brushed, the presenter shines the included UV flashlight on the model. Any residual plaque illuminates a brilliant electric blue, making the point that casual brushing—and lack of flossing—is essential to help keep teeth and gums healthy. The model comes with simulated plaque, a toothbrush, a UV flashlight, and detailed presentation notes.



Becoming a New Dad


Our New Dads Activity Kit is the ideal teaching tool to work with expectant or new dads individually or to lead a new dads workshop. The kit features 13 objects that represent ways a new father can bond with his baby and nurture his growing family. The included full-color presentation notes detail the significance of each object. Everything comes in a convenient black carrying case, similar to the type of case often used to carry work tools.

Facilitators can select items out of the kit and present them one at a time. Each item serves as a prompt for guesses and discussion about what new fatherhood activity it represents and how that activity can promote daddy-infant bonding and partner support. Items in the kit include a walking shoe (taking the baby for a walk), a cleaning sponge (tackling household chores), a glass of orange juice (helping Mom stay hydrated while breastfeeding), a diaper (using diaper changing time as bonding time), and more.
